Turning the Tables on TC

An Interview with TC Doyle, Amazon Consulting’s New Director of Intelligence

By Eileen Renner
Director of Marketing & Business Development

Amazon Consulting recently announced the addition of TC Doyle, former Senior Executive Editor of VAR Business Magazine to our team (click here to read the release). Now we’re turning the tables on the famously inquisitive Mr. Doyle to get his views on everything from his decision to leave his role of 14 years to what he sees as the biggest challenges in high tech channels today.

Q: What made you decide to make this change after 14 years with CMP?

A: I had a great run at CMP. But journalism has its limits as to where you can go. You have to follow ephemeral news developments, which can be a lot of fun. But they tend to dictate how deep you can go into a subject matter before you have to move onto something else. It's a common gripe among newspaper readers and TV viewers, too. Often they are left wondering, "I wonder how that story turned out in the end..." Well, in my new position at Amazon Consulting I can zero in on what matters to our audience most, without getting side tracked by projects that do not have specific appeal. Hopefully, the reports, whitepapers and studies that I complete won't leave you wondering "what ever happened to that thing, you remember that one thing..."

Q: So here’s your chance for a "shameless plug"…Can you describe your new role in 100 words or less?

A: My title is Director of Intelligence. Sounds high fallutin’ but it's really simple: imagine one place where you, a channel executive or manager or program administrator or partner, could get the news, information, research and analysis that specifically applies to you in an easy-to-take tablet form. If I do my job right, you will soon have what you are looking for. And then some. You have specific questions about definitive issues. The news sites, while terrific at what they do, do not presently give you actionable information to help you accomplish your immediate mission or task at hand. We can. You need the definitive low-down on global programmatics? You want the bottom line on points programs or deal registration 2.0? Turn to us. Okay: that was 125 words. Well, expect a little thinking outside the box, and a little rule-breaking. It's our nature. We're not tied to any one way of thinking, any one stream of revenue or any one way of getting you what you need. Count on that. And, for the record, that's 177 words. Read More. 2006 Partner Program Trends Survey Results

Amazon Consulting recently fielded a study with our network of alliance executives on their priority partnering initiatives and challenges for the coming year. While some responses were not surprising, deal registration and points based programs continue to be "hot topics." Other perspectives, such as the factors that are driving changes in high tech channel management today – limited resources, globalization and program automation – were surprisingly recurrent themes in the feedback. To view an on-demand replay of this month’s web seminar highlighting the results of that survey and other recent relevant industry research, click here.

It's an all too familiar problem – some of your best partners don't qualify for the top tier in your partner program. Seems like a win-win relationship, but your partner program only rewards partners for revenue-related performance. However, some partners can't compete on revenue performance alone.
